Country Cottages for holidays in England

When extolling the beauty of the English countryside, where does one start? Perhaps with recognised areas of outstanding natural beauty  or AONB - places that are pleasing to the eye. There is a whole list of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty where it is almost natural to stay in a rural or farm cottage to be on the spot to make the most of a stay in the countryside.

Each country in the world looks very different when viewed from the height of an aircraft. England has a familiar patchwork pattern of well maintained fields, none too large or too long, all in varying shades from brown, to green to dark green. And all perfectly neat.

There is nowhere with the same kind of hedgerows and concern for nature and wildflife. Our farmers are encouraged to leave aside some land for wildlife to flourish. 

It is a pleasure to walk down a country lane in the west country, bordered by high hedgerows either side filled with a profusion of colourful wild flowers. Sweet scented honeusuckle and briar roses are entwined  with the greenery creating a habitat for nesting birds and small mammals.

A stay in thecountry, especially during the warmer seasons of spring, summer and autumn, makes us all feel that much better. It is good to walk with the sun on your face, listen to birdsong and spot wildflowers. Everyone has their own personal favourite rural locations in England, mine being the Isle of Wight. I adore the Isle of Wight because it is so very beautiful, the local food is of such a high standard and the people have old-fashioned grace and manners. It is such a lovely place to holiday. There are cottages to rent all over the Isle of Wight and I would highly recommend it.

Much of the south coast of England is lush and green. The rich farmlands of Dorset and Devon and the slightly wilder countryside of Cornwall all include areas with fabulous scenery and good views.
